Our Story: From Mercury Marine Roots to a Broader Mission

Marine Credit Union was founded in 1949 in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, to serve the employees of Mercury Marine—a connection that remains central to our story today. What began as a practical way to help hardworking employees save, borrow, and build financial stability has grown into a financial institution serving more than 80,000 members across the Midwest, while still honoring the values that shaped its beginning.

1945 — The Idea Takes Shape
Mercury Marine founder Carl Kiekhaefer encourages employees to form a workplace financial cooperative, reflecting a practical, employee-focused approach to financial access.

December 1949 — The Credit Union Is Chartered
Employees establish Aeromarine Employees Credit Union in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, to promote thrift and provide loans to fellow Mercury Marine workers.

Late 1940s–1960s — Small Beginnings, Big Purpose
Early operations are housed inside Mercury Marine facilities, with records famously kept in a single briefcase—a reminder of the organization’s humble, employee-driven start.

1971 — A New Name and a New Location
After the company transitions to Mercury Marine, the credit union adopts the name Mercury Marine Credit Union. Its first off-site branch opens on land provided by Mercury Marine, directly across from the plant for added convenience.

1992 — Marine Credit Union
As membership expands beyond a single employer, the organization shortens its name to Marine Credit Union—honoring its origins while embracing a broader future.
