What Is a Financial Empowerment Center?

Marine Credit Union Financial Empowerment Center

3 Min. Read

Most people know what a bank branch is. It’s where you go to open an account, cash a check, deposit money, apply for a loan, or speak with a financial services representative.

You can do all these things and more with Marine Credit Union, but we don’t use the term “branch” to describe our locations. Instead, we call them Financial Empowerment Centers.

The name reflects who we are and what we believe. While our Financial Empowerment Centers offer the same services you might expect from a traditional branch, they also serve a larger purpose of helping people build confidence, overcome financial challenges, and create opportunities for the future.

Whether you’re becoming a member, opening an account, or simply seeking guidance, our goal is to help you chart a course forward on your financial journey.

Why We Call It a Financial Empowerment Center

The term Financial Empowerment Center (FEC) reflects Marine Credit Union’s mission to advance the lives of people from a place of financial need to a life of ownership and giving back.

When you step into an FEC, you’ll notice that it’s about more than just transactions. Our teams are focused on building relationships, not just processing requests.

We care deeply about each member’s well-being and want to empower you to achieve your financial goals through education, guidance, and access to resources. The name—Financial Empowerment Center—reflects the experience we strive to create.

What Can You Do at a Financial Empowerment Center?

If you’ve never visited a Financial Empowerment Center, you may be surprised to learn that many of the services are similar to what you would find at a traditional financial institution.

When you visit a Financial Empowerment Center, you can:

Become a Member

Credit unions operate as not-for-profit cooperatives, returning their earnings to members. The process to join is simple, and membership is open to anyone who lives or works in our field of membership. Discover if credit union membership is right for you.

Open a Checking or Savings Account

A bank account can go a long way towards taking control of your finances, and it often takes less than 30 minutes to open one. Learn what to expect when opening a new account.

Conduct Everyday Banking Transactions

Our team is ready to help with a variety of transactions, from depositing a check to making a loan payment, withdrawing cash, or checking your balance. Learn more about account and transaction basics.

Apply for a Loan

At MCU, we don’t believe the path to ownership has to be hard. Whether you’re buying a home or financing a car, we have options to help. Discover five steps to ownership and what you need to apply.

 Meet with a Financial Counselor

A certified financial counselor can offer guidance to help you take control of your finances. At MCU, financial counseling is available to both members and non-members. Find more resources for your financial journey.

You don’t have to step into an FEC to access all these benefits. Marine Credit Union also offers convenient access to digital tools like online and mobile banking, as well as a network of Smart ATMs that let you conduct a variety of transactions virtually—24 hours a day.

The MCU Difference

The products and services may sound familiar, but it’s the experience that sets Marine Credit Union’s Financial Empowerment Centers apart.

At MCU, you’ll discover:

  • Team members who take the time to understand your unique goals
  • Conversations that extend beyond routine transactions
  • A focus on breaking down barriers and opening up opportunities
  • Personalized guidance without judgment or pressure
  • Help building greater knowledge, capability, and confidence

“It’s like the Cheers of credit unions,” MCU Community Lead and Certified Financial Counselor Aaron McCollum jokes. “When you step into the FEC, you’ll immediately notice that it’s not just about conducting a transaction. Every member of the team works with care and compassion.”

A Place to Build Financial Confidence

Financial empowerment looks different for everyone. For one person, it may mean improving their credit score. For another, it may mean purchasing a first home, building savings, or feeling more confident managing money day-to-day.

At Marine Credit Union, we understand there is no single definition of success. That’s why we offer support for every stage of your financial journey. With access to free financial education curriculum and tools and opportunities to work with our Certified Financial Counselors, members gain a partner in their corner for the long term.
