Inaugural Marine Credit Union Golf Outing Raises More Than $50,000

Marine Credit Union Foundation Will Use Funds to Support Charitable Causes and Advance Financial Literacy in Our Communities

LA CROSSE, Wis., Aug. 12, 2015 — Financial literacy and charitable causes in our community will receive a $50,000 boost, thanks to Marine Credit Union’s inaugural golf outing to benefit the Marine Credit Union Foundation.

Held on August 5, the outing drew more than 130 golfers to the Golf Course at Cedar Creek Country Club in Onalaska, Wis., and received support from more than 20 company sponsorships, including major event sponsors MOKA, Fowler and Hammer, Staples, Pulse and Success Communications Group.

Since January 2014, the Marine Credit Union Foundation has distributed $122,000 to more than 150 charitable causes in the communities served by Marine Credit Union’s 17 branch locations across Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa.

“What makes our Foundation different, and so successful, is that employees determine where the money goes,” said Shawn Hanson, CEO of Marine Credit Union. “Each of our branch locations has a budget, based on the number of employees that work there, which they help us disburse to the causes they choose.”

Three in four Marine employees contribute to the Foundation through an automatic payroll deduction. Employees have donated $23,000 to the Foundation so far in 2015. The credit union matches each employee donation 2:1: for every dollar an individual donates, Marine donates two.

Members of the credit union have shown support too, giving almost $14,000 in April of this year during the Foundation’s inaugural funds drive. Each new member is also invited to donate $5 with an account opening at Marine.

In addition to funding charitable causes, a portion of the monies raised by the Foundation will also be used to increase financial literacy in the communities that Marine Credit Union serves.
