4 Ways to Make Home Improvements Fit in Your Budget

Man and Woman improving a home

Plans cancelled this summer? Working on some home improvement projects? Want to keep things under budget while your income has slowed? Where do you start?

  • Make a list of projects and rank them by priority. The list should include each (realistic) project cost, timing and any other details you need to remember such as outdoor projects need to be done during the summer, or inside projects might be easiest to complete when the kids are away at camp. Remember that you can work your way down your list of projects as you save money.
  • For some projects time is of the essence. Be proactive. Move those projects up your list of priorities. Fixing a small problem today can save money on a larger problem down the road. Get estimates from multiple vendors and ask for references from people you trust. This will allow you to compare prices and get the best bang for your buck.
  • With each project, stick to your budget. This will allow you to accomplish your list of home improvement projects. Be careful with DIY (do-it-yourself) projects. While it may be more cost effective to take on problems yourself, you might not be qualified and you may cause a larger problem down the road.
  • Get the whole family involved. Let your kids help paint or pick out some finishing touches to a new TV room.
